School board roles

With the Putting Student Achievement First Act, 2026, The Director of Education will become known as the Chief Executive Officer for English-speaking boards only, and have required business qualifications to deliver on their responsibility for financial and operational oversight.

For English-speaking boards only, the new Chief Education Officer role will have required pedagogical qualifications, including membership in the Ontario College of Teachers (or equivalent), to focus on their responsibilities of advancing student achievement and success using their expertise in effective teaching practices

Legislation and regulations

The Education Act  and its regulations provide the statutory basis for how education is delivered to students in the publicly funded school system, including Principal/Vice-Principal Performance Appraisal.

The principal and vice-principal performance appraisal regulation specifies the standards, processes, timelines and forms principals and vice-principals must use for performance appraisal.
