Strengthening cyber security and building trust in the public sector
Ontario is working to strengthen critical digital systems and services, modernize privacy safeguards, and address emerging technological threats for the Ontario Public Service and public sector.
Overview
In response to the rapidly evolving digital and technological landscape, the Government of Ontario is proposing targeted solutions to data-related issues impacting people and public sector organizations in Ontario.
We are seeking to better protect personal data so everyone in Ontario can confidently and safely participate in today’s digital world by doing the following:
- establishing requirements relating to cyber security that would strengthen cyber resilience and maturity across the public sector with clear accountabilities
- setting a definition of artificial intelligence (AI) systems to create consistency across the public sector and establishing protections to ensure responsible use of AI systems
- establishing rules to prevent misuse of children's data
- developing future regulations in consultation with ministries, public sector organizations, experts, the public and other interested parties
- improving protections to safeguard personal information
- modernizing the role of the Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner
- enabling ServiceOntario to provide personalized, transparent and trustworthy digital service delivery for individuals who provide their consent
Why we are taking action
People and public sector organizations in Ontario must be safeguarded against cyber attacks that threaten critical services like health care delivery, privacy breaches that threaten personal information, and emerging risks from powerful technologies like AI.
New measures would allow Ontario to address provincial needs and effectively respond to cyber attacks on critical services, systems and government operations. They would help the public sector protect against privacy breaches that threaten trust in public services and maximize the benefits of AI while minimizing potential risks. We are seeking to establish a modern foundation to better protect the data entrusted to us by the people in Ontario, with the flexibility to address emerging challenges with a particular focus on safeguarding children.
