For adults 18 years or older looking to develop their reading, writing, math, computer and other skills to get further education, apprenticeship training and employment.
About the program
This program helps to improve your reading, writing, math, digital and other essential skills.
You'll work with a service provider to put together a learning plan and develop the skills you need to achieve your goals of further education, training, employment, or independence.
Colleges may refer to this program as "academic upgrading".
You can take the program in English or French. There is also training available to meet the specific cultural needs of Indigenous, Francophone, and Deaf learners.

Eligibility
You must be a resident of Ontario and at least 18 years old.
This program is for people who have reading, writing and/or math skills below the grade 12 level. Your level will be assessed in relation to your individual goals when you enter the program.
You must be able to speak and listen well enough to benefit from lessons in the language of instruction (English or French).
Your service provider may ask for additional requirements.
This program might be good for you if you:
- want to improve your reading, writing, math, computer and other basic skills
- did not finish high school and want to prepare to get your Ontario Secondary School Diploma or to enter College
- want to develop skills for better work opportunities including apprenticeship
- want to develop skills to feel more confident in your everyday life
Program cost
This program is free.
Contact your Employment Ontario service provider if you have questions about additional support such as financial help with transportation, child care services or other needs.

- Take an assessment with the service provider to evaluate your skills and knowledge.
- Based on your assessment results, develop a learning plan with your service provider to help you reach your goals.
