Medical Liability Protection Reimbursement Program

Overview
The Medical Liability Protection Reimbursement Program is for Ontario physicians who are members of the Canadian Medical Protective Association. The program refunds physicians a portion of their yearly professional medical protection premiums that provide protection against medical liability lawsuits. To receive this reimbursement, physicians need to comply with program deadlines and conditions.
Note: Physicians can request reimbursements for past years, retroactive up to 10 years.
Eligibility conditions
To receive a reimbursement through this program physicians must:
- be a member of the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
- be licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
- be practicing medicine in Ontario
- be a resident of Canada during the reimbursement period
- register for direct deposit with the Ministry of Health
- make sure the Ministry of Health (MOH) receives a completed Medical Liability Protection (MLP) Reimbursement Program Authorization/Direct Deposit Request form (The Ministry of Health (MOH) needs to receive this completed form by January 1 for you to be eligible for reimbursement)
Reimbursement options
Option A: Advance reimbursement for non-academics
Option A is for physicians who pay their Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) membership fees in a single instalment.
If physicians use pre-authorized debit to pay their membership fees, they will receive their reimbursement before making these payments.
Payment for the current reimbursement year:
- is made no later than April 30 of the reimbursement year
- consists of 1 deposit
Registration
Physicians need to register annually and establish a payment agreement with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) by January 1 of the reimbursement year.
There is no need to resubmit a new program authorization form for future reimbursements if:
- program eligibility with CMPA remains
- a program authorization form was processed by the Ministry of Health
Option B: In year quarterly reimbursement for academics
Option B is for physicians who pay their Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) membership fees monthly.
It consists of 4 quarterly reimbursement payments throughout the current registration year:
- April
- July
- October
- the final payment in January of the following year
Registration
Physicians need to register annually and establish a payment agreement with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) by:
- June 30 for academics of the reimbursement year
- January 1 of the reimbursement year for all other CMPA work types
There is no need to resubmit a new program authorization form for future reimbursements if:
- program eligibility with CMPA remains
- a program authorization form was processed by the Ministry of Health

- 2024 Schedulee (PDF) - The 2024 Canadian Medical Protective Association fees will be reimbursed in the same manner as they have been in the past until new provisions are negotiated under a new agreement. The provisions of the 2021 Physician Services Agreement remain in place until a new agreement is negotiated.
