Environmental Assessment
The Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton submitted an environmental assessment on July 21, 1997 to the Ministry for the approval of a long-term extension of the rapid transit system into the West Urban Community which comprises the City of Kanata and the Village of Stittsville. The undertaking proposes a strategic plan for the protection of the rapid transit corridors within the West Urban Community, including the Kanata Town Centre, from Moodie Drive to Terry Fox Drive adjacent to the north side of Highway 417 and from the Highway 417/Moodie Drive interchange along an abandoned CP Rail line to the Village of Stittsville.
The government review of this project was completed on November 14, 1998. Following the expiry of the Public Comment Period on December 14, 1998, seven public submissions were received by the Minister of the Environment raising concern with the alignment of the transitway along the CP Rail corridor. As a result of the public submissions, the proponent produced an Amendment to its Environmental Assessment, which removed the CP Rail alternative from the Environmental Assessment. Public consultation on the Amendment was undertaken by the proponent in October 2000. The response to the Amendment was generally positive and no requests for a hearing were made. The Amendment was submitted to the ministry in April 2001. The amended West Urban Transit Integration Study Environmental Assessment was approved by Cabinet on December 5, 2001 (O.C. 2564/2001).
