4. Legal scoring targets
- The target area is defined as the front and sides of the head and body above the belt. The belt is defined as “a line from hip to hip that passes through the navel.”
5. Scoring fouls/penalties
- Fouls and penalties may be awarded in 4 ways depending on the nature of the infraction:
- Penalty (warning)
- Award advantage to the opponent
- Award two points to the opponent
- Disqualification
- Once a foul has been observed, the referee should say “foul” and show the upward pointing clenched fist gesture (their fist should be raised to just above shoulder height).
- For the athlete’s fourth and fifth foul in the U16 (under-16-year-old division), the referee will award two points to the opponent and give one penalty point to the offending athlete for each penalty. The referee will disqualify the offending opponent on the sixth foul.
- When the third penalty is given to both athletes due to passivity, the referee must restart the match with the athletes in the standing position.
6. Results declaration
- At the end of the match, the official will declare the winner of the match by raising their hand.
7. Athlete attire and required equipment
- Athletes must wear the required uniform for competition.
- For Gi competition — the competitor must wear an approved Newaza Uniform.
- For No-Gi competition — the competitor must wear an approved rashguard and shorts. Attire is checked by personnel during the weigh-ins.
