Checklist
Documents and identification
- If you are expecting to receive anything by mail to your Ontario address, be sure to arrange a forwarding address before you leave.
- Take all personal identification with you or make sure it is secure.
- Turn in your health card to your employer. If you will be coming back to Ontario, you will need to renew your health card as soon as you arrive in Ontario.
- Keep originals or copies of employment documents and health records, such as copies of your work permit and your OHIP card number.
- Take your Social Insurance Number (SIN) information home with you. This is needed if you choose to apply for benefits under the Canada Pension Plan after you have left Canada.
Bank accounts and subscriptions
- Cancel or suspend phone/data plans or subscriptions to online apps and services you will not use when returning home.
Income tax return
- You are eligible for a tax refund even if you leave Canada. Learn more about filing your tax return:

- Consider registering for an online “My Account” with the Canada Revenue Agency
- Filing an income tax and benefit return on behalf of a worker
- If you opened a bank account in Ontario, consider keeping the account open to receive any outstanding refunds or benefit payments or provide an international mailing address. If you are not expecting a tax refund, close any bank accounts to avoid monthly fees.
