Sectors
This guide is for school and school board staff who are planning and delivering SHSM programs.
Overview
Review the specific requirements for each sector when you plan to offer an SHSM program at your school. Each SHSM sector has specific requirements that students must complete.
Each SHSM sector has a specialized set of:
- requirements for each of its 5 components
- potential occupations that students could enter from each pathway
As you examine specific SHSMs your school could offer, identify:
- the kinds of employment opportunities each sector offers students
- the postsecondary opportunities each SHSM might lead to
- your capacity to provide the specific components and credits required in each SHSM
Learn more about what to consider when choosing an SHSM.
You should also review the specific requirements for each sector when:
- adapting your SHSM to offer more choices to students
- implementing your existing SHSM

Approvals
We must approve all new SHSMs. New SHSM program submissions are entered via the Education Data Collection Solution (EDCS) SHSM online reporting tool.
Submitting proposals for new SHSM programs is a school board decision. Talk to your principal for details about your school board’s submission process.
Timing
This is an annual process. Submissions are usually due in late December.
