The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is seeking professional engineers to help build and maintain Ontario’s transportation network. Engineering jobs are available across the province, including:

Who can apply
You may qualify for engineer positions if you:
- have a valid professional engineer’s licence from Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)
- are licensed in another Canadian province or territory and can become licensed by PEO
- are an internationally trained engineer who has become licensed in Ontario

Lead Engineer, Projects
- manage external consultants
- manage large or complex preliminary and detailed-design highway improvement projects
- work with senior management, municipalities, external stakeholders and the public
- work with other transportation professionals to develop programs for capital and expansion investments
- support the delivery of a regional capital program
- plan and manage corridor investment activities
- provide technical engineering assessments
- ensure the protection of the ministry's interests
- solve complex planning and engineering issues
Senior Engineer, Projects
- manage large preliminary and detailed-design highway improvement projects
- acquire and administer engineering consultant assignments
- liaise and work with ministry staff, senior management, internal stakeholders, external agencies, municipalities, developers, consultants and the public
- lead public consultation programs
- solve planning and engineering issues
Lead or Senior Engineer, Structural or Bridges
- design new structures and rehabilitation of existing structures
- prepare all contract documents
- inspect bridges, culverts and overhead signs and help manage the province’s structural inventory by planning and designing standard structures
- manage consultant assignments
- review consultant submissions and suggest improvements
- provide engineering advice and direction as required to internal staff and consultants on assigned projects
- provide structural engineering expertise in safety assurance and infrastructure management activities
- work with construction staff, supervise consultants and coordinate with external agencies
Engineer or Senior Engineer, Geotechnical
- review pavement engineering policies, standards and guidelines to check if they work well and meet the ministry’s needs
- test new design techniques, construction methods and materials in pavement design, rehabilitation and preservation
- help develop systems to support pavement design, construction and preservation programs
- investigate unusual or complex engineering problems
Engineer, Traffic
- review traffic engineering studies based on mathematical and engineering theories and cost analysis to make recommendations
- provide staff advice on managing current transportation infrastructure and proposed designs
- prepare formal reports and present findings and recommendations related to traffic engineering issues for technical and non-technical staff
Lead Engineer or Senior Engineer, Electrical
- lead the development and updates of electrical policies, standards, manuals and guidelines
- supervise, teach and support Electrical Engineering Section's Policy staff
- provide leadership, technical guidance and training to electrical staff to ensure policies, standards, regulation and legislation are applied correctly
- provide expert technical advice and support on electrical systems policy and standards to the Minister, senior management, program deliverers, operations staff and external partners and stakeholders
- lead and manage projects related to electrical policy and standards development and delivery
Engineer, Lead Engineer or Senior Engineer, Asset Management
- manage the infrastructure data and asset management systems, investment planning to support the multi-year rehabilitation investment plan
- help develop asset management policies, procedures, standards, manuals and systems
- provide project management support for asset management and investment planning related projects
- help develop investment plans for highway expansion projects
Professional developmental opportunities
Engineering Development Program (EDP)
The MTO offers this program to support engineering graduates who are working toward their PEO licence.
You can qualify if you:
- are working towards your PEO licence
- have recently graduated or will soon graduate from a relevant undergraduate or graduate university engineering program
This multi-year program helps you build your career by taking on more challenging projects and gaining the experience you need for your PEO licence.

Transportation Technician Initiative (TTi)
You can qualify if you:
- are a recent college graduate
- have experience in the private sector
This program is a rotational training program that gives you practical, on-the-job experience. You will help build and improve Ontario’s highways and bridges while developing your technical skills.

Infrastructure Opportunities Partnership (IOP) program
The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) works with Ontario universities and colleges to offer paid, hands-on work experience in the planning, design, contract administration and construction of Ontario’s highways and bridges.
Positions are available in:
- Sudbury
- Thunder Bay
- Kingston
- Toronto
You may qualify if you are enrolled full-time in the:
- first or second year of a civil engineering undergraduate program (4 years or more)
- first year of a civil engineering technology or associate degree program (3 years or more)
The IOP program supports future technical and professional engineering staff including those studying civil engineering technology at colleges and civil engineering at universities.

Transportation Development Career Program (TCDP)
The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) works with Western University in London to offer paid, hands-on work experience in the planning, design, contract administration and construction of Ontario’s highways and bridges.
Applications open in January.
The role includes travel between the office and field and some outdoor work on construction sites.
You may qualify if you:
- are enrolled full-time and finishing first year in a civil engineering undergraduate program (4 years or more) or 5-year Ivey engineering program
- have a valid G, G2 or equivalent Ontario driver’s license
- are legally entitled to work in Canada
