A safe, inclusive and equitable school environment supports learning and behaviour development, including respect, responsibility and civility.

This document provides direction to school boards on how to work with police. It outlines the common principles upon which the relationship between local police and a school board should be based and the 20 key elements they must follow.

It has been developed jointly by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of the Solicitor General to:

  • ensure a consistent approach in how school boards and police services work together across the province
  • promote dialogue and establish effective relationships between schools and police based on co-operation and shared understandings
  • set provincial expectations related to emergency response, including lockdowns, as well as the implementation of school resource officer programs, also known as youth engagement officer programs
