Replacing speed cameras with traffic-calming measures
Through the Building a More Competitive Economy Act, 2025, we are replacing the use of municipal automated speed enforcement cameras across the province and establishing a new fund to help affected municipalities implement traffic-calming measures like speed bumps and roundabouts as well as targeted police enforcement.
As of November 14, 2025, municipalities are no longer permitted to issue Provincial Offences Act tickets or administrative penalty orders for speeding offences captured using municipal automated speed enforcement cameras.
Municipalities with previously existing speed cameras near schools will also be required to start installing new, larger traffic signs to better alert drivers to slow down.
Protecting taxpayers and improving road safety
Since 2019, over 700 automated speed enforcement cameras were installed in over 40 municipalities across Ontario. These cameras do not stop speeding at the moment it occurs since they issue tickets to drivers weeks after the actual infraction.
This makes everyday life more expensive for drivers.

Traffic-calming measures
We are supporting proven road safety solutions that prevent speeding in the first place, keep costs down and keep our streets safe.
The new Road Safety Initiatives Fund will provide $210 million in provincial funding to help municipalities implement traffic-calming measures, including:
speed bumps and cushions
roundabouts
raised crosswalks and curb extensions
enhanced signage
increased police enforcement
These initiatives will maintain the safety of our families and communities without raising costs for drivers.
