Environmental assessment

Taro Aggregates Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Philip Environmental Inc., submitted an environmental assessment (EA) in January 1995, seeking approval to develop their East Quarry in the City of Stoney Creek as a landfill, accepting 10 million tonnes of solid non-hazardous waste from industrial, commercial and institutional sources.

Taro established and funded a “Study Group”, a local community group to review and comment upon their EA during their planning process. Peer reviews commissioned by the Study Group supported the technical viability of the site. Concerns with the site were addressed by extensive conditions of approval under the Environmental Assessment Act and Environmental Protection Act. The project was approved on July 15, 1996.
