A long-standing economic partnership

As global instability grows, it’s never been more important for Ontario and the U.S. to continue working together through our long-standing economic partnership based on a shared history, values and vision for the future.

Ontario has an abundant supply of critical minerals and is a world leader in the future of nuclear energy. This makes our province uniquely positioned to support America’s economic interests and national security objectives.

Many of our key strategic sectors are deeply integrated through cross-border supply chains. This unique partnership helps both of us:

  • promote our shared economic goals
  • employ millions of workers on both sides of the border
  • stay competitive in the global marketplace

Ontario and U.S. trade by the numbers

Ontario is America’s third largest trading partner, helping to employ millions of U.S. workers

$365.3 billion USD in near balanced trade that benefits both sides of the border

Ontario was the number one export destination for 17 U.S. states and number two for another 11 U.S. states

All statistics are taken from the 2023 calendar year.

A vast supply of every critical mineral needed for new technologies

Ring of Fire is one of several mineral development opportunities in northern Ontario that represents a future stable source for critical minerals.

  • mobile phones
  • medical equipment
  • aerospace
  • food production

This also includes new technologies like:

  • fuel cells
  • energy storage systems
  • photovoltaic solar cells

Critical minerals in vast supply in Ontario include:

  • nickel
  • lithium
  • copper
  • platinum group metals
  • cobalt

A large and diverse source of reliable energy to power your growing economy

Ontario’s electricity system is among the most reliable in the world and is powered by a diverse supply mix of sources including:

  • nuclear
  • hydroelectric
  • renewables
  • natural gas
  • biomass

Ontario is building out its electricity supply, including the largest expansion of nuclear energy on the continent and building the first small modular reactors in the G7.

By expanding and exporting energy through our cross-border transmission lines, we can support America’s growing energy needs and economic growth, while helping to reduce continental greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a win-win.
