Types of notices

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development must be notified before the installation and use of a range of equipment and following a reportable incident. This helps protect the health and safety of workers.

To ensure clear and quick communication with anyone holding a prospector licence or mining claim, you are required to notify the Ministry of Mines of a change of address.

Notice of mining activities

Employers must notify the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development before installing portable crushing, screening or associated washing equipment. They must also file this notice when exploring, dewatering or resuming work at a mine where mining operations have been suspended for more than three months.

Notice of the operation of a test drill

Employers in the mining sector must notify the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development before operating a test drill at the surface to prove mineral-bearing substances, rock, earth, clay, sand or gravel.

Notice of magazine or use of explosives

An operator of a surface magazine, or mine using explosives must notify the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development before the first use of a surface magazine or explosives. After that, this notice must be filed annually.

Notice of a reportable incident

Employers of workers who work in mines or mining plants must notify the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development of reportable incidents. They include ground fall, rock burst and vehicle incident or fire. Reportable incidents are identified in section 53 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and section 4(3) of O. Reg. 420/21 — Notices and Reports under Sections 51 To 53.1 of the Act - Fatalities, Critical Injuries, Occupational Illnesses and Other Incidents.

Notice of diesel-powered equipment

Employers must complete this form and keep it at the mine site before diesel-powered equipment is used in an underground mine for the first time. A Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development inspector may ask to see it during a workplace visit.

Hoist operator’s medical certificate

Physicians can complete this form to certify that mine hoist operators are physically fit to perform their duties. Section 238 of Regulation 854 for Mines and Mining Plants requires that operators of mine hoists undergo a yearly medical examination.

Physicians can complete this form to certify that crane operators in mines and mining plants are physically fit to perform their duties. Section 195 of Regulation 854 for Mines and Mining Plants requires that operators of cranes undergo a yearly medical examination.

Change of address

If you hold a prospector licence or mining claim, you must notify the Provincial Mining Recorder at the Ministry of Mines of changes to your contact information (for example, mailing address, telephone number). You’ll also have to give your name and client/prospector’s licence number.
