Overview

The Building Code Act, 1992 and Ontario’s Building Code govern the construction of new buildings and the renovation of existing buildings with reference to:

  • public health
  • fire protection
  • accessibility
  • structural sufficiency

This digital copy of the 2012 Building Code Compendium includes all the content that is found in the hardcopy version, available through Publications Ontario, such as:

Use in Building Code examinations

As of May 8, 2023, the digital 2012 Building Code Compendium can be used while taking Building Code Identification Number (BCIN) qualification exams.

Humber College will give exam-takers a link to the digital Building Code Compendium during the examination (exceptions apply to accommodate the use of screen readers). This means that all exam-takers will be using the same version and will allow the live virtual proctor to conduct a fair exam.

Non-commercial use

The digital 2012 Building Code Compendium is available for personal use and for non-commercial reproduction and distribution.

This means you can include all or a portion of the digital 2012 Building Code Compendium in your own digital product or digital application, as long as it is made available to the public free of charge.

If the material from the digital 2012 Building Code Compendium is not provided to the public for free, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing considers this a commercial use that requires a licence for its reproduction or distribution. More information about these terms will be sent to you by email with your digital copy of the 2012 Building Code Compendium.

Commercial use

The digital 2012 Building Code Compendium may only be used for commercial purposes with a licence from the ministry.
