Overview

The Medical Liability Protection Reimbursement Program is for Ontario physicians who are members of the Canadian Medical Protective Association. The program refunds physicians a portion of their yearly professional medical protection premiums that provide protection against medical liability lawsuits. To receive this reimbursement, physicians need to comply with program deadlines and conditions.

Note: Physicians can request reimbursements for past years, retroactive up to 10 years.

Eligibility conditions

To receive a reimbursement through this program physicians must:

Reimbursement options

Option A: Advance reimbursement for non-academics

Option A is for physicians who pay their Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) membership fees in a single instalment.

If physicians use pre-authorized debit to pay their membership fees, they will receive their reimbursement before making these payments.

Payment for the current reimbursement year:

  • is made no later than April 30 of the reimbursement year
  • consists of 1 deposit

Registration

Physicians need to register annually and establish a payment agreement with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) by January 1 of the reimbursement year.

There is no need to resubmit a new program authorization form for future reimbursements if:

  • program eligibility with CMPA remains
  • a program authorization form was processed by the Ministry of Health

Option B: In year quarterly reimbursement for academics

Option B is for physicians who pay their Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) membership fees monthly.

It consists of 4 quarterly reimbursement payments throughout the current registration year:

  • April
  • July
  • October
  • the final payment in January of the following year

Registration

Physicians need to register annually and establish a payment agreement with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) by:

  • June 30 for academics of the reimbursement year
  • January 1 of the reimbursement year for all other CMPA work types

There is no need to resubmit a new program authorization form for future reimbursements if:

  • program eligibility with CMPA remains
  • a program authorization form was processed by the Ministry of Health
