Information for students about dual credit programs
Overview
School boards and schools share clear, accurate information with students about dual credit programs. This includes information students need to understand program options, registration, credit transfer, and how information is shared.
Dual credit information in course calendars
School board course calendars and course selection materials should include information about available dual credit programs, such as:
- a general description of the program
- the name of the postsecondary institution or institutions involved
- the program location
- the delivery approach
- the application and student selection process
For postsecondary‑delivered dual credits, course calendars should also note that:
- a maximum of 4 postsecondary‑delivered dual credit courses may be counted as optional credits toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
- these credits may not be used to meet compulsory credit requirements
Postsecondary registration information
For postsecondary‑delivered dual credit programs, students are registered as students of the postsecondary institution.
Secondary schools or school boards should inform students that:
- they are not charged fees, including:
- tuition fees
- apprenticeship classroom fees
- miscellaneous fees
- they will receive information before the end of the first class about:
- available supports and services
- the institution’s grading, assessment and evaluation policies
- attendance and withdrawal policies
- they may have postsecondary credit pathway options, depending on the institution and program
Sharing student information
Students, and their parents or guardians where appropriate, should be informed about how information is shared between the postsecondary institution and the secondary school.
This includes information such as attendance records, shared in accordance with relevant privacy legislation and policies.
Parents or guardians of a student under the age of 18 should be informed if the student withdraws from the dual credit program.
Transferring postsecondary credits
Students should be advised to contact the postsecondary institution they plan to attend to ask whether completed dual credit courses can be transferred to the program they wish to enter.
Students interested in transferring credit between postsecondary institutions can also find information through the Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer (ONCAT) at ontransfer.ca.
For information about applying for apprenticeships, students should be advised to:
- visit ontario.ca/apprenticeship
- contact their local Employment Ontario apprenticeship office
- contact Skilled Trades Ontario
