Braces, casts and splints
Braces, casts and splints are intended for individuals who require the item:
- to prevent surgery; or
- for post-surgical care; or
- to assist in physical healing from surgery, injury, or disease; or
- to improve physical functioning that has been impaired by a neuro-muscular-skeletal condition
Exclusions
ODSP only covers items which are not covered by any other source, including government programs (e.g., Ontario Health atHome, Assistive Devices Program, Ministry of Health) or private programs such as private health insurance. For example, items provided by the following programs will not be covered by ODSP:
- The Ministry of Health’s (MOH) Assistive Devices Program (ADP) covers certain mobility devices and orthotic devices. ADP helps cover the costs of:
- manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs and power scooters
- power add-ons (devices added to a manual wheelchair if user does not need a power wheelchair)
- positioning devices (such as cushions, back and head supports, power tilt and recline)
- forearm-crutches
- wheeled walkers for adults
- pediatric walkers, standers and strollers
- Orthotic Devices, that are required to improve an individual’s function in a variety of daily activities, approved for ADP funding are listed in the product manuals. The following types of Devices and additions are funded by ADP:
- Cranial Orthoses
- Spinal Orthoses
- Lower Extremity Orthoses
- Upper Extremity Orthoses
- Orthoses additions
- Orthoses components
- Orthoses modifications
The following items are also not covered:
- Custom-made and off-the-shelf orthotics
