Diabetic supplies
Diabetic supplies are intended for individuals who:
- have been diagnosed with any type of diabetes, and
- require regular monitoring of blood glucose levels
Exclusions
Items provided by the following programs will not be covered by ODSP:
- Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) covers Insulin and test strips
- Diabetes Canada partially covers lancets and traditional blood glucose monitors for Ontario residents with a valid Ontario health card who are using insulin or have gestational diabetes. Eligible clients must apply for Diabetes Canada coverage first; ODSP will cover the balance of the cost if not covered by another source.
- The Ministry of Health’s (MOH) Assistive Devices Program (ADP) covers real-time Continuous Glucose Monitors (rtCGMs), and a grant of $2,400 a year for supplies used with an insulin pump (paid in $600 installments every three months). Other Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM), i.e., Freestyle Libre, are available through the Ontario Drug Benefit.
- If requesting a rtCGM for the first time, the applicant must be referred to their physician or nurse practitioner to discuss their eligibility for coverage under ADP or MOH.
Clients will only be eligible for coverage through ODSP when other program funding is insufficient to cover the cost of medically necessary items.
