Use these study guides if you are writing Building Code exams based upon the 2012 Building Code.

If you are being tested on the 2024 Building Code, please use the study guides for the 2024 Building Code exams.

We expect exams will use the 2024 Building Code starting in spring 2026.

Review this guide to find out what sections and sub-sections of the Building Code Act, 1992, the Building Code or Supplementary Standards you must know to pass your exams and qualify to be a:

  • building official, such as:
    • building official (chief building official, supervisor, manager, plans examiner, inspector)
    • supervisor
    • manager
    • plans examiner and inspector, including on-site sewage system inspector and fire protection inspector
  • designer
  • on-site sewage system installer

Each syllabus is a listing of specific sections and sub-sections that are relevant to each exam.
Pay close attention to the sub-sections required and those that are excluded.
