As part of the Class B/E or C/F road test, you will be required:

  1. Through the Daily Inspection test, to determine the safe operation of the vehicle and identify any of the prescribed minor or major defects as listed in the applicable schedules in the Regulation O. Reg. 199/07.
  2. Through the Backing Skills test, to display backing skills essential for the safe control of the vehicle while reversing into a desired location and simultaneously judging the vehicle’s position as it relates to surrounding objects.
  3. Through the On-Road Driving test, to display skills required to drive a commercial vehicle in most traffic situations while obeying all relevant signs, signals and rules of the road.

The Class B/E or C/F road test is made up of following components

  1. Daily Inspection Test:
    • Exterior inspection
    • In-cab check
    • Interior inspection
  2. Backing Skills Test:
    • Offset backing -- left or right, OR
    • Alley dock (90-degree backing)
  3. On-Road Driving Test:
    • Left and right turns
    • Intersections
    • Lane changes
    • Driving along
    • Expressway section
    • Curves
    • Roadside stop/start
    • Loading and unloading (Class B/E)
    • Railway crossing

To successfully complete your road test, you must demonstrate safe operation of your vehicle, not commit any moving violations and successfully complete all the road test components meeting the criteria below:

  • Daily Inspection Test – Allowed to make errors for 1 item
  • On-road and Backing Skills Test - Allowed up to 30 errors and must complete the backing in less than 10 minutes

Pre-test requirements

For a vehicle that is equipped with air brakes, you must bring the following:

  • Wheel chocks or blocks
  • Means of keeping time to measure seconds
  • A means of holding the brake pedal in the applied position
  • A device for measuring pushrod stroke

If you do not have all of the listed items, the road test will be declared out of order, and you must pay 50% of the road-test fee before you may reschedule the test.

Note: Protective headgear/eyewear, a chart of brake-adjustment limits and a means of marking the pushrod (chalk or similar) are recommended items, but not mandatory.

Daily inspection report and applicable schedule

  • Prior to the road test, you must provide the examiner with a valid and completed daily inspection report, as well as the applicable schedule relative to your vehicle.

Inspection stickers

  • You must also ensure your vehicle has the appropriate annual inspection stickers or valid paper copies.
  • Buses require an annual as well as a semi-annual inspection sticker.
  • Semi-annual inspection sticker is required if the annual inspection sticker is older than six months.
