The OINP continues its commitment to address labour market needs for skilled trades. In 2022, the OINP issued the highest number nominations to skilled trades workers in its history. Approximately 40% of all nominations were to individuals with work experience or a job offer in a skilled trade occupation, including:

  • machinists and machining and tooling inspectors
  • welders and related machine operators
  • telecommunications installation and repair workers
  • construction millwrights and industrial mechanics
  • telecommunications line and cable workers
  • carpenters

In 2022, the OINP saw a high number of nominations in technology-related occupations. Approximately 25% of all nominations were to individuals citing work experience or a job offer in a high-tech occupation, including:

  • software engineers and designers
  • computer programmers and interactive media developers
  • database analysts and data administrators
  • computer and information systems managers
  • web designers and developers

The OINP also nominated health workers to address labour shortages in health care. The program nominated over 150 health care workers in 2022, including approximately 75 nurses and personal support workers.

The program also surpassed its 5% target for francophone immigration, issuing 6.6% or 652 nominations to individuals with high French language proficiency. Most francophone applicants received nominations under the French-Speaking Skilled Worker stream and the Human Capital Priorities stream.

In 2022, the program issued three nominations under its Entrepreneur Stream. By the end of the year, 17 other applicants were in the stream’s compliance monitoring process. We anticipate that these 17 applicants will invest over $10,248,746 million dollars and hire 67 Ontarians as a result of establishing their businesses in the province. An additional 151 applications are in the stream’s processing stage. As of December 2022, five entrepreneurs have been nominated and are operating their business in Ontario.

OINP nominees in 2022 came from over 120 different countries with the highest number of nominations made to applicants from India, China and Nigeria.

While the program’s aim is to be responsive to employer needs and to be available year-round, the OINP continues to experience substantial demand for its streams in 2022, far surpassing its annual nomination allocation.
